André Rennes

A frame-by-frame review of today's driver swing, filmed roughly face-on from the front with the backswing going to screen left and the target to screen right. There is no range-screen shot with this clip, so the report reads the swing itself: body movement, rotation and tempo. It closes with simple next steps.

1 Executive summary

Bottom line: a very stable head and a big turn, with two things to tidy up. The head stayed tall: it dropped only ~0.5 in by impact, against ~5 in in driver report #1. That is the best head-height control in his driver logbook. The shoulders turned about 85° against about 40° for the hips, an X-factor of about 45° (±10–15°). With no ball data on this clip, there is no distance, no ball flight and no comparison with Tour averages.

The two things to tidy up: the hips drifted ~5 in sideways by impact (most of it already by the top), and the hands were ~6.5 in away from their address spot at impact. The tempo ratio is ~6.2:1: a long 1.34 s backswing and a quick 0.22 s downswing. The ratio is well above the Tour 3:1, and nearly all of that comes from the slow, long backswing.

Strength

Head stays tall

Head only ~0.5 in lower at impact and ~0.4 in at the top. The dip of ~5 in from report #1 is gone.

Priority 1

Quiet the hips

The hips moved about 4 in by the top and about 5 in by impact. The goal is to turn, not drift, so the hands can return to their address spot.

Priority 2

Shorter wind-up

The backswing took 1.34 s, more than double his earlier driver backswings (0.50–0.60 s). The downswing is quick and fine; a shorter backswing brings the ratio toward 3:1.

2 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

41.8 frames per second, so each frame is about 0.024 s. The backswing starts at frame 73 (t 1.75 s), the top is at frame 129 (t 3.08 s) and impact is at frame 138 (t 3.30 s).

PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. One frame either way on the downswing moves today's ratio between about 5.6:1 and 7:1.

What it means: The downswing (0.22 s) is quick, quicker than both earlier driver swings. The ratio is high because the backswing is long and slow (1.34 s). The scorecard counts it as Good, but it is far from the 3:1 Tour pattern. The most likely cause is a slow start or a long wind-up before the hands reverse. Aiming for a backswing near 0.7–0.8 s would bring it close to 3:1.

3 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches. It is scaled from his body size in the frame (4.6 px per inch), because his height was not given and no 4 x 4 ft mat is visible. Treat distances as ±1 inch.
  • Vertical center line: runs through the center of his stance (feet) and is the fixed reference for sideways movement. The horizontal line runs through the ball line.
  • Corner-to-corner diagonals: they cross at the frame's center and give a depth scaffold. No alignment sticks or mat are visible on the grass, so there are no depth rays from mat edges. The path edge is not an alignment aid, so depth cannot be separated from sideways motion in this clip.
  • Cap line (white) marks head height at address. The dashed waist line marks waist height, so head and hip height changes can be read directly.
  • Trails: the red trail is the head path and the yellow trail is the hands' path, frame by frame.
  • Tracking: body points were tracked automatically on every frame (260 frames) and checked by eye at each key position. The camera stayed still: the background moved less than 1 px. Rotation figures (shoulders, hips) are visual estimates, about ±10–15°.

5 Position-by-position biomechanics

Photo 1 — Address Set

  • Address frame 69 (t 1.65 s) is the reference for every measure in this report: head, hips and hands are all compared with it.
  • No sticks or mat in the frame, so the stance center line is the reference for sideways movement.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Good start

  • Head stays at its address height (0.0 in down) and moves only ~0.5 in toward the ball.
  • Hips barely move (~0.4 in). The hands are ~4 in from their address spot as the club starts back.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel On track

  • Head is steady (it rises ~0.1 in). The hands are ~7 in from address as the lead arm reaches parallel.
  • Hips have started to shift: ~1 in, with the base still calm.

Photo 4 — Top Big turn

  • Shoulders turned about 85° and hips about 40°, an X-factor of about 45° (±10–15°). A good coil.
  • Head is only ~0.4 in lower, so the posture holds. The hips, though, have already moved ~4 in sideways by the top, and the hands are ~17 in from address.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Hips ahead

  • Hands are ~7 in from address on the way down, and the head holds (~0.4 in down).
  • Hips have moved on to ~5 in (4.8 in) from their address spot.

Photo 6 — Delivery Quick delivery

  • Hands ~5 in from address, hips ~5 in.
  • Head ~0.3 in down and ~1.7 in toward the ball, a gentle drift.

Photo 7 — Impact Hands and hips

  • Head ~0.5 in lower (Good) and ~2.2 in toward the ball (Watch).
  • Hips are ~5 in from their address spot (Fix) and the hands ~6.5 in (Fix).
  • Rotation is about 35° open for the hips and about 20° open for the shoulders (±10–15°). The ball and clubhead are not visible at impact in this low-resolution view.

Photo 8 — Release Extending

  • Head steady at ~0.3 in down and ~2.2 in toward the ball, so the head did not chase the ball.
  • Arms extend toward the target. Hips ~5 in, hands ~12 in from address.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Tall, balanced finish, held to frame 180 (t 4.30 s), with the head ~1 in higher than at address.
  • Hips ~8 in and head ~7.5 in from their address spot, a full move through the shot.

Depth note: this is a roughly face-on view, so the "toward the ball" numbers for head and hips are sideways movement in the picture. They are mixed with depth, and one camera angle cannot split the two. A down-the-line clip of the next swing will settle it (see next capture).

6 One pattern, the whole bag

The link: the old dip (~5 in) has shrunk to ~0.5 in, and the head's sideways drift is down from ~5–7 in (report #2) to ~2.2 in. The remaining move has shifted into the hips: ~3 in in report #2 and ~5 in now. The quiet head is a real win; the next gain is a calmer lower body.

7 Diagnosis

  1. Head height is the big win: ~0.5 in lower at impact, against ~5 in in driver report #1. The posture holds from address to impact.
  2. Hips drift sideways: ~4 in by the top and ~5 in by impact, rated Fix. Since most of it happens in the backswing, the hips slide early rather than thrust late.
  3. Hands return ~6.5 in from their address spot (Fix). This likely goes with the hip shift, and part of it may be depth that this camera angle cannot separate.
  4. Strong coil: shoulders about 85°, hips about 40°, X-factor about 45° (±10–15°). The hips open to about 35° at impact against about 20° for the shoulders, so the lower body leads.
  5. Tempo ~6.2:1: a 1.34 s backswing and a quick 0.22 s downswing. It is rated Good by the scorecard, but it is far above the Tour 3:1 because the backswing is long and slow.
  6. No ball data: without a range screen, distance and flight cannot be judged, and no personal bests can be flagged.

Confidence: high on tempo and key-frame timing (measured frame by frame, ±0.024 s); moderate on head and hip distances (grid scaled from body size, ±1 inch); low on rotation angles (visual estimate, ±10–15°) and on the sideways vs depth split (needs a second angle).

8 Next steps — keep it simple

Priority 1 · Hips

Turn, don't slide

Same camera spot. Stand with the trail-side hip lightly against a wall or a bag, make 10 slow backswings with a driver, and feel the hip turn without pushing the wall.

Feel: "turn in a barrel." The goal is hips closer to their address spot at the top, so the hands can come back home.

Priority 2 · Tempo

Shorter wind-up

Count "back-2-3, down" so the backswing takes about 0.7–0.8 s, then swing down at the same quick pace as today.

Keeps the 0.22 s downswing and moves the ratio from ~6:1 toward the Tour 3:1.

Check · Hands home

Hands back to address

On the next clip, check the hands at impact against the address spot on the grid. Aim for under 1 in.

A quieter lower body makes this much easier.

Keep · Tall head

Cap on the line

Whatever he did today to keep the head at address height: keep it. Cap on the white line until the ball is gone.

~0.5 in of dip is the best head control in the driver logbook.

9 Limitations & next capture

Next capture: (1) the same face-on clip, (2) a down-the-line clip with two alignment sticks on the ground, (3) the range-screen shot right after each ball, (4) 3–5 balls for an average, and (5) André's height, to lock the grid scale. Also say the location in the video, since this one was not recorded.
